Quick answer: For trips under 2 weeks, Airalo's Thailand eSIM is reliable and easy to set up before you land. For trips over 2 weeks or frequent returns, a local AIS or True Move H SIM from the airport offers significantly better data value. Holafly is a reasonable backup if your phone doesn't support eSIM.

Why connectivity matters more in Thailand than most places

Thailand's transport infrastructure relies heavily on apps: Grab for rides, Google Maps for navigation, LINE for communication with hotels and locals. Without data, getting around Bangkok or navigating between islands is considerably harder.

Mobile signal across Thailand's islands is patchier than Bangkok, and some providers that work well in cities drop off on Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, or in northern mountain areas. Coverage differences between networks matter more here than in most countries.

Option 1: Airalo eSIM (recommended for short trips)

Airalo Thailand eSIM
Best for: visits under 2 weeks, first-time visitors
Recommended

Airalo is the most straightforward eSIM option for Thailand. Installation takes about 5 minutes before you leave, and the card is active the moment you land. Coverage runs on the AIS network, which is strong in Bangkok and most tourist areas.

Data packages range from 1 to 20GB, typically 7 to 30 days. Pricing is reasonable for short trips: a 5GB/15-day package runs around $12 to $15 USD depending on promotions. Not the cheapest option for heavy data users on longer stays.

What works well: Simple setup, no SIM card to manage, reliable AIS coverage in cities and most tourist areas.

What doesn't: Pricier per GB than local SIMs. Island coverage can be inconsistent depending on the package.

Option 2: AIS local SIM (recommended for longer stays)

AIS Tourist SIM
Best for: stays over 2 weeks, high data users
Strong value

AIS is Thailand's largest network and has the most consistent coverage across Bangkok, major cities, and islands. A physical AIS tourist SIM from the airport or an AIS shop typically costs 299 to 599 THB and includes unlimited data (throttled after a daily cap) for 30 days.

Available at Suvarnabhumi Airport arrivals hall (AIS counter), Don Mueang Airport, and AIS shops throughout Bangkok and tourist areas. Bring your passport.

What works well: Significantly better value for 2+ weeks. Broadest coverage including islands. Thai phone number included.

What doesn't: Requires physical SIM, needs a free SIM slot. Must get it on arrival.

Option 3: True Move H

True Move H Tourist SIM
Best for: longer stays, particularly in tourist areas
Good alternative

True Move H is Thailand's second-largest network. Coverage in Bangkok and major tourist destinations is strong and broadly comparable to AIS. Some users find it performs slightly better in certain island locations (particularly Koh Samui). Tourist packages are similar in price to AIS.

What works well: Strong tourist area coverage, widely available, competitive pricing.

What doesn't: Slightly less consistent in rural and northern areas compared to AIS.

Option 4: Holafly (unlimited data eSIM)

Holafly Thailand eSIM
Best for: travelers who want unlimited data without tracking GB

Holafly offers unlimited data eSIMs for Thailand: the price is higher than Airalo for equivalent trips, but you don't have to track usage. Coverage runs on the DTAC/True network. Works well in Bangkok and main tourist areas.

What works well: Unlimited data, no tracking required, simple to set up.

What doesn't: More expensive per day than alternatives. DTAC/True network less consistent outside major cities.

Island coverage notes

Most major islands (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Phuket, Koh Lanta) have reasonable 4G coverage from AIS and True Move H. Remote areas and smaller islands may only have 3G or spotty signal. If you're planning significant time on a specific island, check AIS and True Move coverage maps for that location before committing.
